Making good use of suffering: Intra-relational AEDP work with overwhelming emotional experience
3 DVD set - AEDP Training:
Price: $149.99
plus shipping to USA $5 - International shipping $15

About the DVDs
This training DVD is based on Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), a treatment model developed by Dr. Diana Fosha that blends relational, psychodynamic and experiential therapeutic approaches with a metapsychology informed by affective neuroscience and attachment theory.

In this three DVD set, Jerry Lamagna explores the challenges and opportunities of working with clients who struggle with affect regulation. Using video footage of actual sessions spanning a seven month course of treatment, Jerry introduces you to AEDP’s moment-to-moment tracking of experience linked to the client’s past, to meaningful relational contact with the therapist and to the felt sense of change itself. In particular, Mr. Lamagna highlights the use of intra-relational techniques that activate affective change processes associated with moments of self-recognition, regulation, understanding and self-compassion.

Included in this training DVD is a 35 minute lecture, presentation slides, clinical analysis of video material, questions, answers and comments from workshop participants and a companion paper providing more theoretical depth to the ideas presented. Together, the materials provided offer an excellent resource for the study of AEDP’s four state transformational model, Intra-relational AEDP and related therapeutic interventions. The DVD illustrates AEDP’s potential for rapidly relieving psychological suffering and promoting more optimal mental functioning.

First Hour:

Overview of AEDP treatment approach (four state model of change, role of

core affect in transformation), definition of term “pathogenic affect” and

discuss interventions used to help patients regulate affect

Second Hour:

First clinical video vignette: Session #2 with patient. Demonstrates

interventions focused on creating safety, regulating affect and

maintaining an experiential focus. Differentiation technique is introduced.

Third Hour:

Second clinical video vignette: Session #14 Begins with the patient

becoming overwhelmed and highly distressed by painful emotions from

her childhood. Work explored here involves helping her regulate the

painful feelings and cultivating/experientially processing feelings of

appreciation, self-compassion and understanding. The AEDP four state

model of change is demonstrated.

Fourth Hour:

Third clinical video vignette: Session #15 Is a 22 minute follow up of the

previous vignette. It demonstrates the rapid and lasting positive shifts in

the patient’s ability to attend to her emotions, manage impulses to self-sacrifice

and to viscerally experience strength and hope in a way that

feels new and enlivening.

Fifth Hour:

Fourth clinical video vignette: Session #25 demonstrates accrued ego

strengthening/capacities for self regulation that allow for the processing of

anger towards her spouse. The patient recognizes a new, firm quality to

her anger, unlike past “tantrums”. The session demonstrates the processing

of core affective experiences, transformational moments and post-breakthrough

feelings of calm and psychological solidity

Sixth Hour:

Fifth clinical video vignette: Session #26 is a 25 minute follow up to the

previous video vignette. It illustrates the accruing of self capacities (affect

regulation, positive self regard, self-reflective capacity). The session also

demonstrates and reviews all the basic AEDP techniques identified in the

lecture and earlier video sessions.

Participants will be able to:

1. Define the term “pathogenic affect” as it relates to AEDP’s approach to therapeutic change.

2. List and describe two therapeutic interventions specific to Intra-relational AEDP work that assist patient’s in regulating overwhelming emotional experience.

3. Identify the four distinct states that comprise AEDP’s transformational model of change.

4. Explain why early psychotherapeutic work needs to foster a sense of safety both in the relationship between the therapist and patient and within the patient themselves.

5. Specify what techniques Intra-relational AEDP uses to help the client dis-identify with their inner pain, and become grounded in the present moment

6. Develop a client’s capacity to “hold” their pain tenderly, allowing them to better access, process and integrate previously unresolved painful experiences by engendering a sense of security, acceptance and solidity in oneself.

"I have nothing to say except how terrific it is . . . I learned so much from the presenter's work and I think it is inspiring, clear, educational and all around fantastic."

 Hilary Jacobs Hendel, PhD.

"I'm already beginning to feel the presenter's influence on my way of being with patients. Those moments of tape in which he sits with his hands over his heart  have helped me relax and just feel and express from that place. He was so alert to moments of self-righting, where expansion of the patient's usual self was starting to occur . . . Giving others an opportunity to witness this at length makes for a powerful impression."

Dr. Michael Geis, Santa Rosa, CA
"This is a really lovely and moving presentation --  clearly illustrative of the work of AEDP. I learned from watching and felt Jerry's presence with me this week as I sat with clients. I give it a big thumbs up!"
Ron Frederick PhD., Director of Center for Courageous Living; Author of the book "Living like you mean it"
